Weddings in Belize are neither as complicated nor as cost prohibitive as one might imagine.

The main things to keep in mind are that you are your fiancée are required to be present in Belize for at least three days prior to applying for a marriage license. The necessary forms can be located at the Supreme Court Building and a Justice of the Peace must be present as you complete and sign them. The average approval time is about one week. Two witnesses are required, but there are many locals who are willing to stand up for you for a small $5.00 fee. A photo ID or passport is required, as is proof of marital status if either is divorced or widowed.

Such packages come complete with accommodations for the bride and groo, the bridal party and friends and attendees. Getting married on Ambergris Caye became even more exciting with the amendment of the Belize Marriage Act. This amendment affords couples the option of choosing any romantic location that strikes their fancy, rather than being restricted to the Magistrate’s Court. However, if you’ve got your heart set on taking your vows at the Mayan Ruins or another archaeological site, a faxed letter of request is mandatory, and must be received one week prior to your wedding ceremony.
