Things to Do Ambergris CayeWhen most people think of Ambergris Caye, they immediately start to imagine a laid-back environment, white sand beaches and friendly accommodations. While all of these things are certainly true and readily available on the island, there are also a number of unexpected things to do on Ambergris Caye. Here are a few of the most memorable additions to your itinerary that no visitor should miss during their trip to Belize.

See and Protect Saltwater Crocodiles

Although most people think of crocodiles as dangerous animals, the fact is that most are calm until provoked, and in some cases, they are fed by humans and no longer know how to hunt in the wild. ACES, or the American Crocodile Educational Sanctuary, is a refuge just outside of Ambergris Caye for saltwater crocodiles. Visitors can see the crocodiles up close and learn more about these incredible animals from trained guides as well as locals who interact with the crocodiles.

Dance to Traditional Punta Music

If you want to enjoy some of the island nightlife, many of the bars and nightclubs in San Pedro, the major city on Ambergris Caye, are definitely worth a visit. Some travelers stick to the more international locations, but you will be more than welcome in the traditional bars as well. Punta music, recognizable thanks to a heavy drumbeat that comes from the Garifuna culture, is fantastic for a night of dancing.

Marco Gonzales Maya Site

This is an ancient Mayan ruin, but it is much smaller than the other ruins in Belize that travelers generally prefer. There is something to be said for the smaller, quieter environment of Marco Gonzales. The tour guide's wife will prepare your lunch, and you can actually pick up shards of ancient pottery during the tour.

Take a Ride on a Traditional Sailboat

Boat tours are certainly not uncommon on Ambergris Caye, but taking a short evening or morning trip on a traditional sailboat can be a memorable experience. These traditional boats made from hardwood are some of the oldest in Belize, and most are not available for charter around Ambergris Caye.

Along with the beaches, fine dining and wonderful accommodation choices, these unexpected things to do on Ambergris Caye will be truly memorable. Click here to plan your own itinerary for an upcoming trip to Belize
