Belize Reporters win International Belize Biodiversity Awards

Journalists from print, radio, and television media countrywide participated in first edition Biodiversity Reporting Awards in Belize for this 2007. On Thursday, December 6th, Journalists from Channel 5-Great Belize Productions, Plus Television and The San Pedro Sun were the special awardees who won with their excellent reporting of environmental issues affecting their respective communities. The contest was based on sustainable development and the conservation of biodiversity in Belize. The Biodiversity Reporting Award has consolidated itself as a powerful tool capable of encouraging the coverage of environmental and biodiversity issues and useful for building local and international alliances.



Second Annual Boat Parade Lights up the Sea

Flashes of color illuminated the skies and the water on Sunday evening as residents enjoyed the beauty of the second Annual San Pedro Christmas Boat Parade. Boats of every shape and size were imaginatively adorned with decorations that captivated the senses and stimulated imaginations. Seafarers and landlubbers of all ages were dazzled by the highly-watted, joyously-spirited and oh-so-bright parade that was anticipated by many. This year, the sparkling spectacle saw 16 decorated vessels parading against a dark December sky and delighted those watching from the shore. The Christmas Boat Parade, which has been hailed as one of the top holiday happenings in the nation was truly a magical memory to jumpstart the Christmas season.



Belize grows its interest as a premier tourism destination in London at World Travel Market

Belize had a distinct presence in London, England, at one of the key tradeshows of the year which took place November 11th – November 14th, 2007. The Belize Tourism Board had the opportunity to meet with new and existing European wholesalers and tour operators in the U.K. market as well as other regions of the world such as Germany, France, Ukraine and others. This year, the growing interest from the Belize private sector to invest in the U.K. market has resulted in an official larger presence of Belize representatives who had the opportunity to represent themselves visually and conduct business in a growing and lucrative market for the Belize tourism industry. The U.K. market has traditionally been the top producing European market for Belize, accounting for approximately 10,000 visitors alone per year.



San Pedro Delivers Aid to Tabasco

The people of San Pedro, Belize made a small but significant donation to the people of Tabasco, Mexico. Following a joint effort a radiothon was organized by San Pedro`s local Reef Radio and International Costa Maya Festival a group of Belizeans traveled into Mexico where they presented to the Governor and the people of Tabasco $85,000.00 pesos. The Governor of Tabasco Mr. Granier commented that it was not the quantity but the heart and thought of Belize that would make much needed food for a day in Tabasco.



Belizean Recipe - Belizean White Cake

Ingredients - 1 lb cake flour, 1 lb white sugar, 8 ozs+ 1 tblsp margarine (1cup or 2 sticks), 5-6 eggs, 3 tsps baking powder, 1 small evaporated milk (diluted) with equal amount of water or juice of 2 large oranges to give 1-1/2 cups, 1 nutmeg grated, 2-3 tsps lemon and pineapple essence



Method

1. Prepare cake tins. Preheat oven to 350F/180 C.

2. Sift flour, salt, nutmeg, and baking powder (set aside)

3. Cream margarine and sugar until light and fluffy

4. Beat eggs one at a time until very frothy

5. Add margarine and sugar. Mix well after each addition. If an electric mixer is used, mix at medium speed.

6. Add essence. Mix well

7. Before adding flour, decrease speed of mixer to low

8. Add sifted flour alternately with milk. Begin and end with flour

9. Bake for 40 minutes at 350F/180C or until a tester is inserted in cake comes out dry.
