ACTIVITIES
SNORKELING
You can visit Hol Chan Marine Reserve or Shark-Ray Alley. Hol
Chan is an underwater park with a 30-foot-deep channel known for coral grottos
and caves abundant with huge schools of fish. Hol Chan is also very popular with
night divers. Shark-Ray Alley is located 1 mile south of Hol Chan and here you can dive or snorkel with
Stingrays and Nurse Sharks.
BIRD WATCHING & MANATEE WATCHING
Take a trip to the Leeward Islands and
the lagoon areas. Egret, Great Herons and tropical birds can be appreciated
here. Also, a trip to
Bird Caye can be arranged to see many unique birds and Manatees in their
natural habitat.
CRUISES & SAILING
Cruise at sunset, by moonlight, or
customize an excursion to your liking while you enjoy the fresh air of the Caribbean Sea. Sailing can be done through
renting accompanied by a guide.
RIVER TRIPS
River trips for bird watching and jungle exploration. See many
varieties of birds and other natural species of animals including the iguana, howler monkeys
and possibly a gibnut. Also enjoy the exceptional variety of orchids and other plants that
inhabit the river banks.
KAYAKING WIND SURFING/CANOEING/AIRBOATS
If you want to explore
the surroundings of the island, we can arrange for you to rent Kayaks, Wind surfers,
Canoes and of course the new Airboat.
AMBERGRIS MUSEUM
Visit the local Museum to experience
the history of the island from the ancient Mayans to the present (a contribution
of BZ $5.00 is required to keep and maintain the museum).
DAY TRIPS FROM THE ISLAND
MANATEE TRIPS
Enjoy a boat trip from Ambergris
to the islands near the mainland where you'll have the opportunity to see one of
nature's most docile animals, the gentle manatee. After visiting these mammals,
stop at one of Belize's most beautiful small islands, Goff's Caye, for lunch &
snorkeling. Stop at Shark Ray Alley & Hol Chan Marine Preserve on the way back
to Exotic Caye Beach Resort.
VISIT MAYAN RUINS
Visit Altun-Ha or Lamanai located in the Orange Walk
District. Altun-Ha means "Water of the Rock" and was once a major trading center
linking the Caribbean with Central America. Lamanai means "Submerged Crocodile", a
magnificent Maya City. A boat will pick you up at the resort dock in the morning. You
will cross the bay and proceed up a jungle river to a small village. From there you will
board an old school bus for the drive to the ruins. A guide will show you around the
various temples and living quarters explaining the significance of each area, sharing
Mayan history and culture, and answering your many questions. After lunch at a nearby
resort and spa, you reverse the process and are back for a late afternoon return to the resort.
JUNGLE CAVES BRANCH
Inner tube down a jungle river and
through 5 caves carved by the river. Longest cave 15-20 minutes. See ancient
Mayan home sights and pottery deep inside the cave. One of the top ten coolest
things you may ever do in your life.
VISIT THE COMMUNITY BABOON SANCTUARY
This sanctuary, located in
the Belize District near Bermudian landing, is where you can see Black Howler Monkeys
known locally as Baboons. Their loud raspy howl can carry over a mile.
VISIT THE CROOKED TREE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
This sanctuary, located about 30 miles
north of Belize City, is home of the Jabiru Stork (the largest bird in the
Western Hemisphere).
VISIT THE BELIZE ZOO
To fully appreciate the wildlife that
Belize has to offer, a trip to the cage-less Belize Zoo is a must. Over
125 animals native to Belize can be seen here, including endangered species like
the Jaguar, Tapirs, Black Howler Monkeys and many more.
VISIT THE BUTTERFLY FARM
See thousands and thousands of butterflies in
beautiful gardens of tropical wildflowers
*Some of these mainland trips may be combined such as the Baboon
Sanctuary and Crooked Tree or the Zoo and the Butterfly farm.
GOLF
Visit nearby Caye Chapel for a round of golf.
This private island has an 18 hole course. Reservations are required at least one day in
advance. See the front desk to make arrangements.
TRIPS THAT MAY REQUIRE AN OVERNIGHT STAY ON THE MAINLAND
MAYAN RUIN SITES
The following temples are located in the Cayo District:
Cahal Pech which means "The Place Of The Ticks", Caracol which means "The
Snail" (the largest ruins of a sprawling Mayan City), and Xunantunich which
means "Maiden Of The Rock" (a major Mayan site located near the Mopan River and the
Western border with Guatemala).
COCKSCOMB BASIN JAGUAR PRESERVE
Located in the Stann Creek
district (south central) is a 155 square mile wildlife sanctuary with a portion dedicated as a
Jaguar preserve. Although the chances of seeing a jaguar are slim since they are nocturnal, you
may see their footprints as evidence of their presence. This preserve is raw jungle at it's
best. There are hiking trails and guides from the nearby village for those who want to go
off trail.
MOUNTAIN PINE RIDGE
Go on an adventure to the Hidden Valley
Falls located in the Cayo District. These spectacular 1000ft falls has water
cascading over 2 steep ledges. Follow that by a visit to the half-mile long Rio
Frio Caves. Finish off this excursion with a walk to Rio-On-Pools to swim in a
series of mini-pools that create a chain of waterfalls among tremendous
boulders.
HORSE BACK RIDING
Half, full day and overnight guided trips to ruins,
waterfalls, caves, jungle trails and other remote areas. This type of trip can be arranged
directly from your hotel.
CANOE TRIPS
Full day canoe trips on the Mopan river. See jungle plants and
animals by slipping up on them quietly from the river. Stop at the Butterfly farm and see
thousands and thousands of butterflies.
