Island Amenities
Ambergris Fine Dining
The island of Ambergris Caye is home to many restaurants. This list is by no means complete, but it will give you an idea of the variety and basic flavors available.
Laughing Barracuda
Fresh seafood and continental cuisine with a
Belizean flair. A wonderful dining experience. Verandah overlooks the sea. Try this one early in the trip; you will want to return. Open 3 meals 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. Moderate to expensive. Phone--2809
Capricorn
Fresh seafood and continental cuisine. This restaurant is a favorite. 4 miles north of town, you will need to make reservations and to get there take a water taxi. Well worth the small effort to get there. Open lunch and dinner. Moderate to expensive.
Sweet Basil
Italian sandwiches and salads. North of the split, this is a great place to lunch if you happen to be biking or riding a golf cart north to explore. The
Italian cold cuts are excellent and the Greek salad with capers is delightful. Lunch recommended. Moderate.
Fido's Courtyard
Seafood, Belizean, and continental cuisine. This is a fun place for casual dining in town. Open seating under a large thatch palapa. Live music most evenings. Open breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Moderate.
Ambergris Delight
Pizza and Belizean fare. This is a don't miss on your trip to the island. If you want a pizza, as we usually do when we're down for a week, this is the place to get it. But whether you opt for pizza or stewed chicken with rice and beans, both of which are great, you will have a great time being entertained by Chino, the waiter, who will perform magic tricks table side and then stump you with a brain teaser while he gets your food. Open lunch and dinner. Inexpensive to moderate. Phone--2464
El Patio
Seafood, salads, and Belizean fare. 1 block south of the resort off the beach and adjacent to a grocery store, this restaurant is easy to overlook, but the locals know about it and it is usually full. With good reason. The salads and vegetables are always fresh and the Spanish courtyard setting is fun. Open lunch and dinner. Moderate.
Jade Garden
Chinese cuisine. Located off the beach on Coconut Drive this establishment is famous for its fresh seafood dishes. If you have a craving for Chinese food while on vacation, give in to it and enjoy this prize. Open lunch and dinner. Moderate.
Cannibal Café
Salads and sandwiches. Located on the beach in town, you can't miss the decor and logo of this fun place. Outdoor seating at brightly colored picnic tables completes the scene for delicious salads and sandwiches. Try the chips and unique homemade salsa. Open lunch and dinner. Inexpensive to moderate.
LIONS Chicken
Chicken, beans, and slaw. This is also a do not miss. (unless you are allergic to chicken) The LIONS club Bar-B-Q's chicken at the north end of front street every Friday evening. As soon as you get into town you will smell it and want it. The chicken is always great and you know that any profits are going to support the LIONS Medical Clinic on the island. Friday 6:00-8:00. Inexpensive (p.s. after chicken, go across the street for ice cream at Manelli's)
Mickey's
Belizean specialties and sandwiches. At the north end of Coconut Dr. right at the edge of town, Mickey's is famous for Wednesday burritos. Also a favorite place for breakfast. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Moderate to Inexpensive.
San Pedro Night Life
Note: Evenings special for a certain event each week are listed first.
Every night of the week something is going on somewhere in this small town. The variety of choices is excellent, from
reggae to Punta, from rock and roll to the Mexican sounds of horn and guitar. Each is offered at a differing venue adding to the unique atmosphere of the evening. This list is kept as current as possible but once on the island reconfirm any strong choices for accuracy.
Pier Lounge, Wednesday Night The Chicken Drop is an island tradition. Every Wed beginning at 6:00 pm the Pier Lounge sets up for the gaming event of the week. Just outside on the beach is a small fenced area with a grid of the numbers 1 - 100. A ticket is sold for each square and when all tickets are sold a chicken is released into the fenced area. The rest you can guess. Great fun for the whole family.
Jaguar's Temple, Friday Night
Beginning around 8:00 you can witness the very popular local activity of
Karaoke. You will be amazed at the crowds inside this downtown disco and the line to get to sing a song. The crowd is young but not too rowdy early in the evening. This is a must do for those people interested in going "local".
Fido's Courtyard is home to live
music almost every night of the week. Usually beginning at 8pm
Holiday Hotel has a wonderful Trio on Wednesday nights. Very close to Pier lounge and the Chicken Drop.
Big Daddy's and Jaguar's Temple are the local disco's. You will find a young crowd dancing to the local Punta Rock, a high energy sound that commands you to move. Especially crowded on Fridays and Saturdays.
Shopping
The island of Ambergris Caye has not become the commercial
mecca like the Bahamas or the Caymans. Consequently you will find little in the way of big name fashions, perfumes, and designers. What you will find are many hand made crafts that can either decorate your home or be given as gifts.
The most popular form of handicraft are the carvings made from the wood of the Zaragote Tree. This unique wood is extremely hard and has an incredible grain pattern. It also has the interesting characteristic of having both light and dark colors side by side naturally. The carvings are sold widely throughout the island in the shops but even more so in the streets or on the beach. Better bargains are achieved when buying two or three from one vendor if you desire more than one.
Black Coral jewelry is also very popular and the government controls the amount of coral that can be used for this purpose. Again, you will find it in the shops but also sold informally along the beach.
There are several local artists who may or may not be represented in the galleries in town. "Mad Dog Mike" sits just south of town on the beach and does sketches of island scenes and life. Near where he sits is Amy who forms ceramic creations that have the life of the sea breathed into them. Ask Mad Dog Mike to point out her home to you.
In Fido's courtyard is an artisan's gallery that you will want to visit. This shop contains the largest collection of differing items from Belize and the neighboring Mayan Countries. They also have a great collection of paintings from the local artist, Walter Castillo.
Groceries
There are 4 main grocery stores on the island and then many smaller shops which specialize in either fruits and vegetables or meats. We are fortunate enough to have 2 of the larger stores next to our resort. Rocks II a second store from the original grocery store in town is located about 100 yards south of us on Coconut Dr. It also is home to the El Patio restaurant. North of us about 250 yards, also on Coconut Dr. is another grocery store which just opened.
The fruit and vegetable stands are great for fresh produce. Wednesday is the day to buy fresh produce as it is the day the boat arrives from the mainland with the best of everything. All normal precautions should be taken with regard to washing fruits and vegetables but generally getting sick from the food and water is not a concern on Ambergris Caye.
You will be able to find most items of need in the stores here. You may not always find the specific brand you are looking for but generally all types of items are available. Be prepared to pay 2 times the US price for US specialty products, like
Kellogg's Corn Flakes or Spaghetti-O's, but for main stay items such as milk, cheese, eggs, bread, fruits, vegetables, meats and drinks the prices are the same or less than what you would pay at home.
Pharmacies and Medicine
Ambergris Caye is a small island and there is more medical care represented than the population might warrant. There are two medical clinics and several doctors who maintain independent offices. For minor accidents or illnesses there is ample treatment on the island. A hyperbaric Chamber is also located here for dive emergencies. For serious illness or accidents Belize City has a hospital equipped with modern technology. In extreme cases there is a "Wings of Life" plane stationed on the island to medivac a patient to either Merida, Mexico, and the Catholic Hospital, or to the international airport for evacuation to the United States, two hours away.
The island has two pharmacies with a good supply of medications for the normal ailments. It is advised, however, that whatever prescriptions you will require on your stay, you bring with you. Items such as saline solution for contacts and other specialty items should also be brought along.
