Snorkeling on Ambergris Caye is one of the most fascinating activities in which to partake when visiting Belize. The snorkeling and dive sites are easily accessed, and some of the finest are right off of the Caye. The combination of clear azure water, diverse marine life and premium weather conditions each conspire to set Belize apart as a premier snorkeling and diving vacation destination. The average water temperature of the reef is between 79° in February and 84° August through September, while the water depth is between 50 and 200 feet deep. It is filled with both hard and soft coral formations and stunning waterscapes.

Oh the Things You’ll See!

Gorgonians, hard corals, tunicates and sea fans and a startling variety of shellfish inhabit the clear, coastal waters. The prevalence of a species in a particular reef is what gives that dive site its name. For example, there are dive sites at which grouper tend to congregate, and another where stingrays are too numerous to count. Loggerhead turtles, spotted eagle rays and nurse sharks are usually out and about; and the snorkeler should expect to see several of these majestic sea creatures. Although sightings are rare, hammerhead and Caribbean reef sharks also make their home in these coastal waters and are only occasionally seen by a lucky diver or two.

In The Alley

The adventure of snorkeling on Ambergris Caye would not be complete without a dip in Shark Ray Alley. This dazzling and unique snorkel / dive site has been touted as one of the top seven “animal dives” in all of the Caribbean. The sharks and rays are abundant and have quite an affinity for people. More than just a “polite” tolerance for snorkelers and divers these creatures actually seek out human interaction. With a wing span of up to four feet the rays, seemingly gentle giants, like to engage the divers by swimming with, at and around them.

Some friendly nurse sharks and rays may act is if they want to be petted. Please remember that they are not tame creatures, and you are in their “alley”, therefore it is advisable not to become too familiar with them. However, just being in the water as they swim beside you is cause enough for the adrenaline to rush and stories that will be told forever to be created.

Be Mindful and Eco-Conscious

A distinguished official once opined, “The sea is not ours to do with as we please; we have borrowed it from our children.”
Having said that, please keep the following in mind while snorkeling on Ambergris Caye and Shark Ray Alley:
• Don’t trash the ocean.
• If you see non-biodegradable items on the sea floor, please pick them up.
• Be extremely vigilant in taking care not to damage the coral.
• Leave your diving gloves in your bag―you won’t be as tempted to touch the sea creatures.

Finally, do enjoy your time in Belize. There is no place like it in the Americas for communing with sea life among the delicate resplendent coral reefs in the warm turquoise waters.

Imagine saying “I do” on an exotic tropical isle: a stunning backdrop of turquoise waters, palm trees swaying and the fragrance of ocean air mingled with the scent of tropical flowers…It sounds like the wedding of most young women’s dreams. But wait! Weddings in Belize are not only for the rich and famous anymore. More and more couples are choosing locations such as this to begin their lives together. Weddings in Belize are neither as complicated nor as cost prohibitive as one might imagine.

The main things to keep in mind are that you are your fiancée are required to be present in Belize for at least three days prior to applying for a marriage license. The necessary forms can be located at the Supreme Court Building and a Justice of the Peace must be present as you complete and sign them. The average approval time is about one week. Two witnesses are required, but there are many locals who are willing to stand up for you for a small $5.00 fee. A photo ID or passport is required, as is proof of marital status if either is divorced or widowed.

If you are interested in a religious ceremony, the following denominations are represented: Anglican, Assembly of God Baptist, Episcopalian, Jehovah’s Witness, Hindu, Mormon, Mennonite and Roman Catholic.

With that out of the way, now it’s time to begin planning your dream wedding in Belize

Romance Among the Ruins

Why not get married on Ambergris Caye? The Exotic Caye Beach Resort is happy and willing to assist in the planning of your special day. They will even secure an officer of the court or the appropriate minister to officiate. To facilitate the planning of your nuptials, inquire about the availability of wedding and honeymoon packages. Such packages come complete with accommodations for the bride and groo, the bridal party and friends and attendees. Catering, decorations, and room service are also provided by an experienced staff member.

Getting married on Ambergris Caye became even more exciting with the amendment of the Belize Marriage Act. This amendment affords couples the option of choosing any romantic location that strikes their fancy, rather than being restricted to the Magistrate’s Court. However, if you’ve got your heart set on taking your vows at the Mayan Ruins or another archaeological site, a faxed letter of request is mandatory, and must be received one week prior to your wedding ceremony.

One more thing: Bridal shops in Belize are few and far between. It is advisable then, to bring your wedding gown and tuxedo, or opt to visit some of the local shops and choose some vibrant tropical wedding-wear.

To get married on Ambergris Caye or anywhere in Belize is a fairy-tale come true. So let us help you plan your wedding and make it everything you dream of, and more

If you have never experienced a vacation on Ambergris Caye Belize, you are missing out on a magical island paradise ideal for your holiday travel. Belize is home to rain forests, tropical coastlines, deep blue water and delightful English speaking citizens. There are simply too many things to do on Ambergris Caye for one visit . A flight into the mainland and a short flight over to the Ambergris Caye will make you feel as if you have landed on another planet full of marvelous tropical food, endless activity and the incredible Belizean people.
Things to Do on Ambergris Caye
Many people head to the Ambergris Caye area to snorkel and dive . It is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world. There are many dive companies to choose from, and they are held to the highest safety standards.
The Barrier Reef is 185 miles long. It is accessible in as little as one mile from the coast of the Ambergris Caye, easily accessed by boat. Much of the reef is unexplored, but for the purpose of preservation and excellent diving, there are spots on the Reef which are a must see. The Hol Chan is a marine reserve where no fishing or coral removal is allowed. The Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef offers technical divers a 400 foot drop for a magical descent into the geological past. It is truly a once in a lifetime decompression dive.
Fishing in Belize
Another splendid opportunity on the list of things to do on Ambergris Caye is to take out a boat with a guide to go fishing. There are an enormous variety of tropical fish to be caught and many fascinating techniques and spots that only the local guides know. A few days of fishing in Belize can find you fishing for extremely rare catches like the Permit, also known as the ghost fish. Many fishermen come to Belize to complete the grand slam of Belizean fishing. The grand slam will include catching the Permit, a Tarpon and a bonefish.
Exploring the Country
On top of the superb diving and fishing available around the Ambergris Caye, many travelers come to see the beautiful country of Belize. It is easy to travel to the zoos, the rainforests and the Mayan temples from the Ambergris Caye. Most importantly, no matter your choice of activities while in Belize , the main goal is a chance to relax. The gorgeous sunsets, modern accommodations and beautiful beach walks will make sure your vacation is pure relaxation.

In addition to snorkeling and diving along the 25 miles of vibrantly pristine coral reef lining and its shoreline, there are a plethora of activities on Ambergris Caye to amuse and delight.

Imagine flying through the tropical rain forest and actually making eye-contact with a Howler monkey or two and many other of its residents! That’s what zip-lining is all about. The adventurer is safely harnessed-in , while swiftly gliding above the treetops. If you enjoy a good adrenaline rush, then this activity is custom made for you!

Tours for the Nature Lover

For visitors who prefer to enjoy Ambergris Caye on land, the Lamanai Ruins is a must-see. The tour begins with a boat ride to the mainland where you will be treated to a cruise up the lovely New River. Bring a good set of binoculars – you won’t want to miss a thing!

Along the way you will see manatees, exotic birds, crocodiles and many other species of wildlife. Next, you will embark on a private tour of this Mayan site during where a troop of Howler monkeys are likely to make an appearance.

Subterranean Adventures on Ambergris Caye

Thus far, we’ve explored underwater, aerial and above ground activities on Ambergris Caye. But we’ve left out one of the most exciting and unusual attractions: cave-tubing. Your voyage begins inside this mystical, sacred place with experienced tour guides. As you float along the Mayan Underworld on large, sturdy inner tubes there are lights to lead the way. You will see incredible crystalline rock and limestone formations as well as ancient artifacts once used by the Mayan people. This is the single venue where cave-tubing is offered in Belize.

A word to the wise: these cave sites commonly include the skeletal remains of sacrificial victims who were offered up to the formidable and volatile gods of the underworld. As a rule, the skeletal remains are of young children―the preferred choice of the rain god Chac. In other instances, the casualties were adult males and the occasional female. There is every indication that the sacrificial ones were brought into the caves alive, and met with their demise at the conclusion of the ceremonies.

From snorkeling and diving to discovering ancient ruins; from gliding through a rain forest to exploring ancient caves via an inner tube, the activities on Ambergris Caye are indeed endless and eclectic.

But don’t just read about it. Experience the adventure for yourself when you book a vacation to Ambergris Caye!

Ambergris Caye is reminiscent of the Hawaiian Islands in 1962. This tropical island of enchantment can best be described as an extraordinary fusion of contemporary and yesteryear. As you travel the sandy streets of San Pedro in a golf cart―the primary mode of transportation―you’ll see an eclectic array of trendy bistros, boutiques, restaurants and bars.

Paradise is Nearby

The best part is that all of these attractions are in proximity to hotel rooms on Ambergris Caye at the Exotic Caye Beach Resort. The resort’s accommodations feature oceanfront condo suites whose adept and friendly staff is eager make your vacation the best it can be.

They are delighted to assist you in arranging a day-tour to the main island of Belize, a parasailing adventure, hydro sliding, horseback riding, jet skiing or a fabulous voyage in glass-bottom boat. Or perhaps your dream vacation includes catching up on your reading while lazing in a hammock or taking in the local arts and culture. If that’s the case, you’ve come to the right place!

Local Culture and Shopping

There are some nice Belizean art galleries on the Caye to browse. Some feature the paintings and sculptures of local artists, while other galleries focus on lithographs, watercolor, jewelry, ceramics and masks. If you are curious about the culture of the indigenous Garifuna, ―descendants of Amerindians and Africans― there is a gallery at which you can learn everything about them, and more.

If shopping strikes your fancy, simply stroll down Front Street for a diverse shopping experience you won’t forget. There are no malls here; just serene relaxed shops for you to enjoy. These shopping venues specialize in merchandise such as art, wines, clothing, jewelry, cosmetics, bamboo and wood furniture, ceramics, music, Cuban cigars, fresh, local foods, coins to name a few. Bonus: the downtown area is designated as a “pedestrian-only” zone on Saturday and Sunday evening. This makes for a delightful evening of shopping and strolling without the worry of golf cart traffic as you walk to and from your Ambergris Caye hotel room.

So you see it makes perfectly good sense to make resort reservations on the Caye. Everything you’d possibly want to see, do, or experience is within reach.

Ingredients:

• 2 red snapper fillets, about 6 to 8 ounches each

• 4 tablespoons butter

• 1 medium clove garlic, pressed or minced

• 3 or 4 drops Worcestershire sauce

• ½ teaspoon Creole or Cajun seasoning, or your own favorite seasoning blend, with salt

• 1/8 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

• 1 to 2 teaspoons minced fresh parsley

• 1 teaspoon snipped fresh or frozen chives (optional)

• 3 to 4 tablespoons plain or seasoned bread crumbs

• 2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Preparation: Place snapper fillets in a baking dish which has been sprayed with butter-flavored baking spray. In a skillet, melt butter with garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Creole seasoning blend, pepper, parsley, and chives, if using. Cook on low for 2 minutes, just to blend flavors. Brush both sides of fish fillets with the butter and herb mixture. Toss bread crumbs in the remaining butter mixture; sprinkle over the fillets. Bake at 400 degrees for about 12 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fillets, until fish flakes easily and is no longer translucent.

Sea Trek is surprisingly fun and straightforward and I completely enjoyed my sea trek experience. As usual, I was delighted with having another close encounter with living coral reef and its colorful reef creatures in the crystal clear, warm turquoise waters of beautiful Belize. The Sea Trek briefing took about 10-15 minutes and all of my questions were quickly answered. It’s ultimately an enjoybale walk on the bottom of the sea with a weighted helmet fed with air from above. I just had to pick a pair of rubber Croc shoes that fit and get into my bikini and I was all set.

Go under the sea for a warm and colorful adventure in Belize.

A Warm, Underwater Adventure

The water was 86c. The Sea Trek guides fit you with your helmet and away you go.I didn’t need to lift a finger and amy hair and face didn’t even get wet. The sea symphony team and Discovery expeditions really took care of everything. Once underwater, you walk on soft, white sand, around the coral heads alongside the reef. There is a SCUBA diving staff member with you as well as a lead and sweep walking Sea Trek guide. The helmet made breathing easy and you can pinch your nose to equalize. After about 30 minutes of underwater exploration we ere brought back to the ladder and as I ascend, the helmet was removed from my shoulders. Afterwards, I enjoyed a scrumptios lunch aboard the Sea Symphony top deck. It was a wonderful afternoon’s experience and I won’t hesistate recommending it. If you would like some more info on this neat aquanut adventure, vist the Discovery Belize website to read more about a Sea Trek adventure from San Pedro.
