Ziplining on Ambergris CayeIf you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit Ambergris Caye, it's understandable that you may never want to leave. After all, this incredible island off the coast of Belize has luxury accommodation options, incredible cuisine, cultural attractions in the city of San Pedro, opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, scuba-diving and plenty of secluded beaches where you can relax. Despite all of this, it can definitely be worth heading to the mainland in order to experience more of the local culture. Here are some of the top mainland tours and trips on Ambergris Caye that allow you to enjoy the rest of Belize during your stay.

Ziplining and Underground Caving Near Belize City

In order to get from Ambergris Caye to Belize City, you can either hop aboard a small plane for a 20-minute flight or take the more affordable ferry to the mainland. Once you arrive, one of the top tours will take you right to the Caves Branch Archeological Reserve. As the name suggests, the highlight of this destination is the underground cave system, and you can actually explore these dark caves on foot or by inner tube as you float along the underground rivers. After a filling lunch at the cafe within the reserve, you can head to the tops of the trees and try zip-lining through the lush trees in the tropical forest.

Explore the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich

No trip to the area would be complete without experiencing some of the Mayan culture in Belize and learning about the history. To reach Xunantunich, you can take a bus from Belize City to the ancient Mayan site. Don't forget to snap a picture from the top of El Castillo, a giant castle that offers spectacular views. From El Castillo, you can see across Belize and all the way to the border with Guatemala.

Try SNUBA at Mexico Rocks

Although there are opportunities to swim, snorkel and scuba-dive on Ambergris Caye, visitors will need to head to the mainland in order to try SNUBA. This is similar to scuba, but you have the tank floating on the water, and it is much easier. Mexico Rocks is not actually in Mexico, but it is a diving spot midway between Ambergris Caye and the Belize mainland.
